Shop Small Spotlight: Patchouli

IMG_0190.JPG

Theresa Mae Smith, owner of the new shop Patchouli, started in this businese when she was in high school. The time came to slow down her successful journey and open a store front. She openned the end of August and began to share her eye for the old and beauty in all things vintage. Here’s the rest of her story….

Patchouli I had the same business name for 20 years and I felt I needed a change. Patchouli is favorite scent and I have worn it for years! So, that’s the first thing that popped into my mind. The name has actually brought in shoppers, some because they know what Patchouli is, others out of curiosity.

The Beginning I’ve been in the Antiques business since I graduated high school in 1979. I started out with small booths in local antiques malls. I opened a small store, then started traveling to other states and do shows. I’ve participated in large shows in Round Top, Texas and Brimfield, Massachusetts. I’ve sold inventory and display pieces to New York showrooms, many, movie stars and Decorators with their own TV shows. It’s been a wonderful journey and I’ve been very blessed over the last 20 years. I’m getting older now and felt the need to get off the road and open a brick and mortar store.

Courage and Fire I’ve never been afraid of a challenge and I enjoy being self employed.

The Hard Stuff Mixing vintage items with new items, but I’ve managed to make it work.

Inspiration I’ve liked vintage items since of was a child. I bought my first Antique when I was 14 years old, it was an Iron Bed off the side of a garbage truck. My daughters slept in that bed for years. Over the years of dealing in antiques I’ve collected many small vintage items. One day I decided to start using those items to make jewelry. Not all my jewelry has vintage items.
