Shop Small Spotlight: J&J Shop

A cute little shop just openned up in town. You can find it across the street from the hospital, nestled in the corner of the shopping center called J&J Shop. It has a cozy, personable feel and is a welcoming place filled with tons of great gifts. You will probably end of up walking out with something for yourself too. I did ;-)

We wanted to know more about this new shop in town and the owner Jordan Hourigan, so we asked him a few questions.

The Journey of J&J Back in 2014 at only 15 years old the journey began. Being so young, I had to have someone drive me to my shop daily. My mom, Joni was more than glad to help out after her daytime job, on the nights and weekends. To honor her, I decided to use J & J as the name for my business. J & J Inks was the first name used, as I wanted it to be a different kind of apparel company than most local shops. Instead of using a name like J & J Shirts or J & J Screen Printing, I used “inks” which is the part of screen printing I feel is mostly ignored and forgotten. Screen printing is an art form that uses textile printing INK, hence the name, J & J Inks. In 2017, when J & J Shop was born, I carefully chose “shop” as I didn’t simply want to use boutique or any other name that would keep us from still seeming like a print “shop”.

Location. Location. Location We have other locations in Lebanon, Danville, and Bardstown.

Inspiration We use many different supply chains to stock our stores. The market is filled with many boutique-style stores, but at J & J, we want guys to feel welcome too. I strive to choose products that make our customers appreciate their hometown, home state, etc. Other items just make me smile, so I just hope that it brings joy to others too.

Why J&J I opened J & J Shop because I had an abundance of overstocked t-shirts from bulk sales, and printing shirts through the use of heat transfers was an easy way to sell those tees. There truly isn’t another shop like ours out there!

Small Business Love I love being a small business owner because of the people I am able to meet and interact with. I haven’t spent a day in my shops working with anyone but friends who have become family, and serving customers who treat us like neighbors.

Why Here? Etown has always been a shopping destination for my friends and family from Marion County. There’s a charm that Etown has, just like Lebanon. When the pandemic began in March, my wholesale company grew rapidly so I decided to use that cash-flow to invest in my retail company. I opened Danville, and decided to go on and setup another store... or two... in Bardstown & Elizabethtown, all very beautiful cities in Central Kentucky.

Love Where You Live Like I previously mentioned, Etown has a charm that reminds me of home. The small town vibe with big city retail and restaurants makes it just right for a modern, simplistic style like mine.

Favorites Now this is a tricky question... I love everything we sell! I guess if I had to choose, my favorite would be our witty tees that have just simple typeface designs on them.

Dream for the Future I dream of one day carrying our brand into franchises. After building a model that is easily repeated in multiple locations, I plan to continue that through inspiring others who have a love for printing.
