Amazin' Glazin' Donuts

Most Friday mornings are Amazin’ Glazin’ mornings in our house. And for good reason. The owner, John Rizer, makes pillowy soft glazed donuts and you can get them conveniently through the drive-thru. As you walk in the shop or drive-by (now during this contactless world) it’s like you are instantly covered in a sugary, sweet, dusting. Almost like fairy dust. And you are taken to a magical place as you wait to open that box and take that first bite.

These donuts though didn’t happen by magic, but with hard, passionate work. It began with John’s dad working for Dairy Queen and then John got into the business, eventually, he got even more experience working for Country Oven Bakery, a baked goods manufacturer in Bowling Green. John said he had no previous experience in making doughnuts and really was able to learn from visiting a test kitchen at Dawn Foods in Louisville.

From experience and learning, he knew what he liked and what he didn’t like in a shop, and what he wanted in a donut. The business was heavily influenced by his father’s early memories of visiting a donut shop in his home state of Ohio, and from there the idea of Amazin’ Glazin’ was born.

John and his wife Dawn says that “he coudn’’t have done without the help of his dad.”

As the recipe was created and the business plan was drawn out they just needed the building where they lived here in Elizabethtown. Finally, 515 North Mulberry Street became available, and since 2006, they have been churning out donuts. Producing about 300 or more donuts a day. John’s day starts way before the sun comes up.

Today the Amazin’ Glazin’s process includes mixing dough, letting it rise, cutting it, balling it, rolling it, cutting it into shapes, putting it into a proof box for 30 minutes, moving it into a fryer for two minutes, moving it through a glazing tunnel, allowing the donut to dry and decorating the final product.

They are constantly creating new varieties. From jelly-filled to themed donuts for the season. At least 35 varieties can be found featured including bear claws and danishes. We personally can’t get enough of red velvet with cream cheese icing. It’s so unique and of course yummy.

John and his family are fun, sweet, generous humans and it comes out in their service and in their donuts. They say having a donut shop is just fun, and Amazin’ Glazin’ is filled with fun.
